How much time do you spend every day to delete spam or read them? Definitely a sizable amount of the precious productive time is spent on dealing with spam. Almost all internet users using emails and mailboxes encounter this problem. Spam usually carry advertisements or news irrelevant or unnecessary to you and most of all they land in your mailbox without your permission. This is enough cause for you to filter spam using specialized soft wares.

Many software development companies try consistently to block spam by inventing newer methods to filter spam. Both the spammers and the software professional fight parallel to one another. When the experts develop spam filters, the spammers use another method to introduce spam in different ways. It like the world war between the internet giants and like the real war one party fights for the good of the internet users when the other fights to destroy the internet. Who wins the battle is unpredictable as both win and lose simultaneously.

Anti spam software should be thus carefully chosen to filter spam and protect the working environment and save time. The nature of spam, the size of the work force and the capacity of the software to identify real spam from the important mails should be widely analyzed before ordering software. Home users can download free software to fight spam. But business concerns which work on various computers must have software which can delete spam even before it reaches the computers.

Anti appliance spam is also used to filter spam eve before it reaches the mail box. Whenever mail arrives it first passes through the software spam filter where it is scrutinized for authenticity. It is released to the mail box only if it proves to be real mail. Spam mails can come in different forms. It can also come with your friends email id. The spammers collect the most mailed ids through illegal means and send spam mail through them.

The worst part is many spam might prove to carry virus definition and when opened attack the users operating system deleting files and folder. The spam mails may also be Spyware implemented to hawk the users’ private details. Whatever be the type of mail it is always wise to fight it before it becomes malicious to our working environment. Now after reading the above article, you must have got the idea of the fact that fighting spam is not an easy task but with little care and filter spam, you can achieve it.

Could the mass media hype about computer viruses actually make the problem worse?

If you believe what you hear in the media, there are an awful lot of viruses going around. No, I’m not talking about the make-you-sick kind of virus, though they get plenty of airtime, too. I’m talking about the kind of virus that enters via your internet connection rather than your nasal passages.

What the mainstream media often don’t tell you–at least, in most radio and television newscasts and in the crucial headlines and opening paragraphs of newspaper articles– is that many of these “viruses” are not viruses at all.

What Computer Viruses Really Are

The main reason the mainstream media always are in alarm over viruses is that they tend to call any malicious computer program a virus. In reality, there are at least eleven distinct types of malicious software, or malware, commonly affecting computers today. The most common of these are worms, Trojans, and spyware.

So, what’s the difference between computer viruses and the other types of malware? The difference is that computer viruses are just about the only ones that regularly shut down computers and cause other obvious damage. The most common of the other kinds of malware–worms, Trojans, and spyware–are usually only detectable with a special scan.

The Real Danger of Computer Viruses

If the other types of malware are so unobtrusive that they can only be detected with a special scan, then what’s to worry about? For starters, these programs are called malicious for a reason: they are designed to cause some kind of damage, if not to your computer, then to someone else’s.

Worms are most famously used to damage, destroy, or disrupt other computer networks than the one on which the host computer is located. For instance, worms have been used by website owners to shut down rival websites by sending overwhelming numbers of requests to the computer that hosts that website. Worms have also been used to send out viruses to other computers, often without infecting the host machine–after all, what would it benefit the worm to shut down its host computer?

Trojans, in turn, are often used to insert worms and other malware on your computer, even if the Trojan itself does no damage.

But even if you don’t care what happens to anyone else, you should still be concerned about one kind of malware: spyware, a kind of malware that, true to its name, collects data from your computer and sends it back to a remote host.

Most spyware is only interested in monitoring your internet usage so it can tell other programs, called adware, what advertising to popup on your computer. However, there are criminal spyware programs that steal financial data, or perform a thorough identity theft. Don’t think you have personal or financial data on your computer? Some spyware programs contain a key logger, which is a program that copies whatever you type, usually in order to snatch passwords. Even if you keep no financial information on your computer, if you ever buy anything over the web, the key logger would allow its owner to buy stuff using the same information you typed in to buy stuff yourself.

Why Blame the Media?

Given the danger of all these different types of malware, isn’t it a good thing that the mass media are becoming hysterical about it? And can’t they be forgiven the sloppy reporting of calling Trojans, worms, spyware, and other malware “viruses”?

No, no, no.

This is a classic case of bad reporting doing more damage than no reporting at all. In this case, the damage bad reporting has done is to promote a common myth that goes something like this: “The only malicious software is a virus. Viruses damage your computer. Therefore, if my computer is working OK, my computer has no malicious software. I only need to scan my computer for problems when there is a sign of problems.”

Thanks to this myth, many people complacently let their antivirus software go months out of date, not wanting to be bothered with scheduling an automatic update. Just as bad, many people don’t have any extra software to combat the other types of malware that may not be covered by antivirus software.

In fact, it’s not uncommon for people who have found malware on their computers after a scan to say, “But I never had malware on my computer before!” But how would they have known if they had never scanned!

Until the biggest mainstream media–and especially television–start educating the public about the need to have their computers automatically scanned at least daily, the world will continue to have major, drawn-out problems with malware that could have been wiped out as soon as soon as the anti-malware software makers discovered it.

And until that day, the mainstream media will have many more opportunities to run hysterical stories about “viruses,” thereby forcing them to sell more newspapers and broadcast to even larger audiences of people who suck at the information trough yet somehow never become full.

So, you have decided you wish to purchase a laptop computer. The convenience and the technology are certainly tempting but when you visited the Dell site and the HP site, the various laptop options seem expensive and confusing. What is the difference between memory and hard drive space? What size screen or what screen resolution do you actually need? How long should a battery last and do you actually need the latest and greatest Window’s release?

Shopping for a laptop without knowing the facts about the options out there can make the buying process painful and frustrating. Additionally, you may buy more laptop than you need on impulse. Many people are convinced to buy a new, high tech laptop when they could be happy with a far less expensive refurbished notebook or used laptop for less than half of what a new machine might cost. What you need to do is assess your needs and then make smart decisions.

First step back a moment and think about your computing needs. If your laptop is for your summer home and will only be used an hour here and there for a few months or if it will sit in your extra bedroom and get minimal use, or if you just need a machine to handle e-mail and browsing the web, then you don’t need the latest and greatest laptop technology.

You need to consider and decide what applications you will be running. E-Mail and browsing are included with the Operating System, but word processing and spreadsheet programs are usually not. Microsoft Word often must be purchased separately and is expensive. Here are some of the applications you may want to consider and the technical resources they will require.

* Word Processing - Word processing requires a minimal CPU (Central Processing Unit), since you cannot type faster than a very old Pentium 90.

* E-mail - Email applications will also require a minimal CPU, minimal RAM (Random Access Memory) and your internet connection speed will not matter, unless you are sending or receiving very large files (photos).

* Browsing Web Pages - Internet browsing requires minimal CPU, 64MB RAM performs ok, but 128MB will be better. The speed at which you are connecting to the Internet is more important than the speed of the CPU. For example, a 56K dial up modem is slow and DSL or cable modem connections are at least ten times faster.

* Online and Computer Gaming - You should review the Minimum Systems Requirements of the games you play the most. Some games require a very fast CPU (2 GHz, lots of RAM (maybe 2GB) and a specialized graphics chip while others may not. If you are interested in participating online, you’ll have another set of requirements to meet as well in terms of internet connectivity.

* Music - Music does not require much in the way of computing resources. The amount of storage depends upon how many songs you have. The average song takes about 5MB, so 300 songs would be 1.5GB.

* On-line Shopping - This in essence is just like browsing the web. You should have at least 128MB. The CPU is not as important as your connection speed (56K modem is much slower than DSL or Cable).

* Database Applications or Personal Finance - Simple database applications like Goldmine or other sales applications do not usually need much in the way of CPU or Hard Drive space. Again check the Minimum Systems Requirements of your application. A very complex or large database (like QuickBooks) might need a large hard drive and a very fast CPU.

Overall, your communications link to the internet is going to be an important factor in your laptop choice. As discussed, 56K modems are slow by today’s standards and cable or DSL are much faster. It is also quite easy and inexpensive to add Wi-Fi (wireless internet access) if you have cable or DSL and a Wi-Fi card can be added inexpensively to most laptops.

If you do not have an Internet Service Provider you need to sign up for one. Many people choose the local telephone company for DSL access or go with a national service, like AOL or EarthLink for dial up. Call your local cable company for rates on access through a cable modem.

If the laptop will mostly stay in one place, then the size is not that important. Obviously, newer laptops are lighter and often more portable, and the weight will change depending on the size of the screen you choose. If you will be moving it around a lot then check out the size, the weight and perhaps the battery life. Some of the newer laptop can hold a charge for five or six hours, but it various considerable and you need to carefully check the specifications and how they determine the charge time. Additionally, if you are traveling extensively, carrying a prohibitively heavy laptop computer can be incredibly inconvenient.

In many instances, your first step will be your own budget assessment. Think about how long you will keep the laptop and how much use it will get. Spending $1000 might make sense if you us it 2-3 hours every day and will keep it for three years. That is $3.00 a day, which seems very inexpensive for a valued tool. On the other hand if the budget is $300 and you are only browsing the web and doing e-mail then an older refurbished laptop would be fine. As with any technology, figure out what you need and what you can pay before doing your research and making a decision. Refurbished laptops and used laptops can be a great buy and you’ll have the tool you need without spending more than you should.

Written by Blair Stephens our expert of the day.

The term Spam is thought to be derived from a Monte Python skit. But the fact that Spam makes up over 80 percent of emails sent isn’t that funny!

A Monte Python sketch performed in 1970 references the British rationing during World War II. SPAM was one of the only meat products that was readily available and not being rationed. Python’s sketch is set in a café and every item on the menu contains Spam lunch meat. A song repeating the word SPAM is being sung and is drowning out the waiter who is dictating the SPAM filled menu in detail.

An instance of unsolicited commercial email was originally noted in 1978. Although it seems that the idea was born years earlier when an unsolicited electronic messaging using the media occurred by telegram in 1864! In the 1980’s the term Spam started to be used to describe annoying users of early chat rooms who would repeatedly type the word Spam in an abusive manner to drive others out of the room. Especially others from rival groups surrounding said topic. They would also flood the screen with quotes from the Monte Python sketch in the same manner. Soon rather than being called flooding or trashing it became common place to refer to these methods as spamming. Later it evolved to mean excessive multiple posting of the same message. In the 1990’s we began to see the excessive amount of “get rich quick” schemes being advertised in this manner. Commercial spamming began in 1994 courtesy of two lawyers advertising their immigration law services. Shortly there after the focus of spamming and anti spam efforts moved to email and that is where the focus of this phenomenon remains today.

Most of us receive some type of Spam everyday. Spam is incredibly easy and inexpensive to create and can be very profitable. There are a number of companies set up to send “bulk e-mail”. They are able to send billions of messages a day. In the US there have been a number of lawsuits concerning Spam and laws created trying to reduce the production. Therefore, it is becoming more prevalent that these companies operate out of foreign countries. They have also changed their soliciting methods to read “spam-free” which refers to a person who has chosen to “opt-in” by clicking a box near the end of some enrollment form thereby agreeing to have updates or newsletters sent. Sometimes this box is pre checked and you must unclick in order to “opt-out”. These names are then sold to the bulk e-mailing companies.

Spam filtering software is the best technology available at the present time to reduce Spam. Spam filtering is included in most versions of anti virus software. It is pretty simple for spammers to sidestep these filters simply by misspelling keywords. Also, these filters often block e-mail that you do want to receive because of key words being misinterpreted. SPAM hits other venues besides email such as instant messaging, chat rooms, newsgroups, forums, mobile phones, online games, search engines, and blogs. For the time being it looks like the only way to avoid a majority of Spam is to avoid traditional email all together. Requiring a person to fill out a form that is in turn sent to the recipient successfully blocks spammers. This is currently how many business and organizations including the White House are handling their e-mail.

The term Spam is thought to be derived from a Monte Python skit but is not received by many as being humorous. Spamming is a phenomenon that has been beneficial for some and a nuisance to the masses who make up the recipients of the billions of messages sent per day.

Unless you live in a cave –and one without a computer at that– you’re very familiar with the huge time waster that sifting through mountains of email spam can be. And while spam is a huge annoyance for employees and end users everywhere, the real costs for businesses are in time and money and they’re increasing every day. As costs rise, IT people (at SMEs in particular) are desperate for ways to deal with it effectively.

It’s estimated that 100 billion spam emails fly back and forth, dirtying up the internet every day. A lot of these emails end up on in business email boxes, and employees are forced to spend their mornings sifting through mountainous piles of spam. All of which is time they’re spending not working.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Spam Filters

Installing anti-spam filters is really the only effective way to deal with day-to-day spam within a company. These filters work to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak, allowing the good emails through and tossing the junk in the trash. They do this by combining several different types of technology and updating almost constantly. And while the highest quality spam filters do provide relief, sifting out about 98% of a company’s spam, they’re still imperfect.

Why? Unfortunately, spam filters occasionally have trouble telling what is wheat and what is chaff (to stretch an already-tired metaphor), and toss some important emails out along with the junk. And while they don’t occur that often, ‘false positives’ can still become a problem for business owners.

One solution to the problem of false positive is adjusting the sensitivity of the company’s spam filters. The way this works is simple: the higher the sensitivity, the more spam is caught. But the higher the sensitivity, the more valid emails will be taken out with the trash. Increasing the sensitivity of spam filters can cost companies a heck of a lot more money than too much spam after all, customers don’t like it when their emails go ignored.

The Direct and Indirect Cost of Anti-Spam Filters

Even one little missed email can get a company in deep water. A law company based out of Colorado, for example, missed an email containing some important information about a court date and ended up missing an important day in court. The cost? They were required to pay all of the fees for the opposing counsel.

How did this happen? To combat spam, the company’s IT department had turned up the sensitivity of their email filters. Apparently, the United States District sounded pretty spammy to these super hyper filters, and it costed this company thousands of dollars in fees. Ouch.

While this is a nice and obvious example of how false positives can lose a company money, in most cases it’s simply not that cut and dried. Most monetary losses aren’t direct; they come from a loss of business and credibility. When an email from a client is gobbled up by the spam filter and a big business deal falls through because the client feels ignored, it takes a lot of work and public relations to get that client back. And sometimes it never happens.

In addition to directly losing a company money, false positives can affect productivity just as much as an overload of spam can. If employees are used to seeing a lot of their important emails get junked, they will have to spend valuable time sifting through their spam folder for genuine emails. How much can that cost? More than you’d think. According to Ferris Research, recovering a genuine email from a spam folder costs an average of $3.50 of that employee’s time. Especially if you don’t experience many false positives, it may not seem like much but in a company of 500 people who have to fish out two emails from their spam folder a month, it adds up to $42,000. Does that sound like an itty-bitty expense to you?

It doesn’t to most other business owners, either. And to reduce the number of false positives –and the amount of business lost– many businesses don’t use any anti-spam filters at all. And while it’s hard to judge them for wanting to prevent a loss of business, going without a spam filter opens them up to all sorts of problems. Taking care of spam is just too important.

Striking a Balance

But how do you deal with spam and reduce false positives at the same time? The best method is to set aside all mail marked as spam into a special folder so that users will have access to it, and can check it often. While this may seem time-consuming, with good anti-spam software it really doesn’t have to be. The better the software is at recognizing obvious spam, the fewer emails will end up in the junk folder.

As spam filters improve, so do spammers. Because of this, spam filters will probably never be 100% effective– the ones that will delete every piece of spam will generally delete a few important emails along with it. And the ones that let all the important stuff though will also let in a bit of junk. But using a good, well-configured anti spam software and integrating it with your email server can really reduce the amount of spam that end users receive, as well as the rate of false positives you experience.

Written by Jesmond Darmanin our expert of the day.

Computers have become a major part of our lives today. You depend on it. You use it at work, at school, for business, and even for pleasure. When it does not work as expected, however, this great tool becomes a major headache. In many cases, though, with a slow computer all that is needed is good registry repair software.

Regular Registry Cleanup Is Needed

The registry file on your computer is what directs the computer to the various files and software that you need. It tells the computer where to go to find it. With time, however, you end up with a corrupt registry because every time you add or subtract software files, some get left behind. After a while, there are many such unnecessary files and other data that it can really slow your computer down - or, even stop it altogether.

If you download a lot of programs, or move them around a lot, then it becomes necessary to run your registry repair software regularly. This will enable your Windows registry to be kept streamlined and able to run at optimum levels.

Registry Repair Software Will Fix a Computer

Registry repair software will efficiently clean computer registry and get your computer back up to the operating speed you had before. Most likely, if you have never used a registry cleaner on your computer, then you will probably notice a significant improvement in speed. It should be close to what you had when you first got the computer.

Not All Registry Repair Programs Are Equal

As you go online and start looking for a good registry repair program, it will not take long before you notice that registry cleaners come with a lot of different features and capabilities. It is a very good idea to look at registry repair reviews in order to see what the ratings of each one may be. You also want to get one that is capable of handling your Windows version. This is especially important if you have the new Windows Vista software.

Having the right Windows registry cleaner is important because some registry repair software will hardly do much at all. Whether you download a costly version or a free registry cleaner, you will want the best you can get. A good version will have the ability to create a backup file for your registry. This is essential in case there is a problem and this will give you a way to remedy it - if it should be needed.

Only Minutes Are Needed To Improve Your Computer Speed

After you decide on which registry repair software you want, it only takes a few minutes to download and install it. By checking the registry repair reviews, you can also discover which ones are easy to use. After you install it, it should only take a couple of clicks to get it started, and then about 15 to 20 minutes to run. And, presto - your computer is almost back to its pristine self again!

While you are looking online for a good registry repair software, you may also want to make sure you have a good software program that can remove adware, spyware and malware. These programs can also definitely slow your computer down, too.

Written by Ronald Hudkins our expert of the day.

Adware is one of those intrusive things that seems to have just “happened”. Of course, early computers weren’t often connected to the internet so the chance for annoying Adware to appear was a lot less. Unless you had the misfortune to use an infected floppy disk, you were probably OK.

Then came the turn of pop-up adverts but with the advent of pop-up blockers the adware companies have had to resort to other ways to get our attention. If most people block pop-up adverts most of the time, what’s the point in using them?

Some pop-up adverts are still unblockable - they just appear on your screen, sometimes below your current browser window, sometimes occupying the full screen. Most times you can just click the “close” button, but it’s still annoying. After all, why should anyone have the right to take you away from the current web page you’re viewing? It’s the internet equivalent of cold calling on the telephone and is enough to make you growl!

Adware gets worse when it starts to slow down your computer. The most intrusive is difficult to uninstall, such as programs that display random adverts and crash your browser in the process.

If you know exactly when the Adware installed itself, you may be able to get away with doing a Windows System Restore to a point in time before the Adware affected your computer. Always assuming that the Adware didn’t install itself with another program that you actually wanted.

Sometimes you can get remove Adware by paying an upgrade fee. Browsers like Opera work this way - you can have a free copy, supported by advertising, or you can pay a small fee and get rid of the adverts. Or you can change to an alternative program that doesn’t inundate you with adverts - this is easy with a web browser but may be more difficult with a more specialist application.

The next step in Adware removal is to do a search on the web for instructions. If you’ve been infected by a fairly common piece of software, this can be a viable option. But it still frequently involves delving around in the Windows registry, which is a dark and scary place (even to some geeks) and if you get something wrong you can destabilize your computer further.

Alternatively, you can get a piece of software to do the hard work for you. This has the advantage that - providing the software has been programmed correctly - it should be reliable and a simple process. Adware removal software is available free or fairly cheap. The free programs like Spybot Search and Destroy work well but you usually have to remember to run them.

If you’ve got more than enough things to remember already, it’s worth spending a few dollars on a program that will work away in the background of your computer in much the same way as your anti-virus software does. Incidentallt the only reason I can think of as to why most of the anti-virus companies don’t check for Adware as well is that they can sell us another program. But that’s life.

Written by Lucas Richardson our expert of the day.
